competition rules

USM and ADEYAKA BCN with the experience of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, organise Pavilion Workplace, the competition of ideas for architects, designers and students, with the aim of reflecting upon work spaces. The Barcelona Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for the 1929 International Exhibition, is to be used as the setting for the competition. This year the jury will select 2 winning proposals, one will be from a professional and another from a student.

The competition is held with the aim of generating a framework for reflection on the current state of offices and places in which people carry out their professional activities, and what they might be like in the future. The Barcelona Pavilion will be used as the site for developing these proposals.

Pavilion Workplace will make available to the participants a wide range of pieces of furniture for work spaces from USM in order to develop their proposals.

The Barcelona Pavilion, an emblematic work of the Modern Movement, has been exhaustively studied and interpreted as well as having inspired the oeuvre of several generations of architects. It was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich as the German national pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition.

The competition is open to European professionals and students from the fields of architecture, design and interior design, who are interested in reflecting on work spaces and offices.

For the second edition, professionals and students from the same fields from Mexico and China are also invited to participate. Participation is open to both professional studios and any individual under their own name. From all the participants, the jury will choose 1 professional designer winner and 1 student winner. There will also be 6 finalists.

Those who have direct family ties to any members of the judging panel who make the selection of the proposals are excluded from participating.

The jury will select 8 proposals as finalists, of which 2 will become the winners. One of the winners will be a proposal by a professional designer and the other winner will be a student (at the time of submitting the proposal).

The 2 winning projects will be reproduced with VR technology and will be available as a video recreating the VR experience. The two videos will be shown during the awards ceremony to be held between 18 and 22 October 2021 at the Barcelona Pavilion and streamed worldwide.

In addition to this, each winner will receive a piece of furniture worth 2.500€. If the winning proposals are made by a team of people, the team will receive the piece of furniture. USM will also be happy to welcome the winners at their headquarters in Munsingen, Switzerland, designed by Fritz Haller.

The finalists will receive a present from USM and ADEYAKA BCN

Participants are invited to study the catalogues of USM to get to know its products and to use them to develop their proposals.

The project must include, as its principal foundation, furniture and compositions from USM. Other furniture can also be used as long as it has already been produced by a manufacturer and a VR item of it exists. The winners will be asked to send the furniture elements using the following 3D compatible files for the VR project: .skp, .3ds, .dwg, .dwg, .obj, fbx, .3dm.

It should be noted that the pavilion is already fit with all necessary facilities for comfort.
